iPod Touch Cluster MoviePlay

Most of us would be happy to get a single video to play on our PMP without having to run it through some sort of transcoder first, but the folks at Mongoose Studio needed something more complex. They've released a video of a project that's been in the works for some time, clustering 12 iPod touchesinto a sort of bezel-riffic widescreen display. All are controlled by a master, 13th iPod that can cause them to display a clock in the interest of verifying synchronization (which is far from perfect, as you'll see in the embed below), or to trigger the playing of a movie. We're guessing that the footage must be manually split into appropriate files for each device, and we're also guessing that horrible things would happen should someone come along and re-shuffle them. But, if you have a lot of friends with iPhones and a lot of free time to prep the film, this could make for a rather interesting movie night -- until someone gets a call, that is.

" this could make for a rather interesting movie night -- until someone gets a call, that is. "

Contradictory sentence here as iPod touches don't receive calls.

However, this is cool.

I must say that I wouldn't enjoy watching a video on this form of display because of the empty spaces between the iPods.

Imagine this on the iPad.

Imagine this on the HD screen iPhone 4.

Revolutionary.

Custom Firmware Gives iOS4 Features to iPhone2G

If you have iDevices like the iPhone2G or the iPod touch 1G, you'll know that Apple does not have any more new firmware updates for these iDevices. Which means to say no update to iOS4.

The Custom firmware created by Matteo Morando is based on 3.1.3 and is built using PwnageTool. It incorporates numerous utilities to add features such as multitasking, wallpaper, tethering, sms count, and more.

You can follow the guide here.

If you are daring and interested, download the files here:

  • Download PwnageTool whited00r for iPod Touch 1G (Beta).

  • Download PwnageTool whited00r for iPhone 2G (Lite Edition) (Release 1.2).

  • Download PwnageTool whited00r for iPhone 2G (Full Edition) (Beta).

Send a mail to faq@whited00r.com if you can't create a custom firmware with PwnageTool or you are a Windows user.

Do it at your OWN RISK.

Apple Issues iPhone 4 Exchange Fix via Profile Update

If you noticed after updating to iOS4 that you are unable to sync with your company's Microsoft Exchange Server, here's why.

Symptoms

Immediately after updating to iOS 4, some users may notice that Exchange ActiveSync Mail, Contacts, or Calendars do not sync, or sync very slowly. In addition, some Exchange Server administrators may notice their servers running slowly.

Products Affected

  • iPod touch.

  • iPhone 3G.

  • iPhone 4

  • iPhone 3GS

Resolution

To work around this issue, users should install a configuration profile from Apple that increases the amount of time the iOS 4 device will wait for the Exchange Server to respond to its sync requests. For best results, the profile should be installed on as many iOS 4 devices at your company as possible.

To install the profile:

  1. Use Safari on your iOS 4 device to download the configuration profile. It may be easiest to read this article with your iPhone or iPod touch and tap the download link there, but you may also email the attachment to another email account on your iOS 4 device, and tap the attachment to open it.

  2. Tap Install to install the profile, and enter your passcode if prompted.

  3. A warning message will appear because the profile is not signed. Tap Install Now.

  4. Tap Done to complete the installation, then power off your device and power it back on.

  5. Wait for your Exchange data to finish syncing.

After installation, the profile will be listed under Settings > General > Profile.

How to Check the Bootrom or non-MC for 3GS or ipt2G.

What??? Don't know what it means?? let me break it down for you...

When Apple created the iPhone3GS the Bootrom was the same as iPhone3G thus able to jailbreak with the same exploit as the other iDevices, then came the new shipment of iPhone3GS with new Bootrom (iBoot-359.3.2) which gives the jailbreak community headaches..

As for the iPodtouch2G, same story... So, the important part here is to be able to tell the difference with the older model and the newer (more challenging) model.

iPodtouch2G: How to check?
Good: MBxxxxx; Bad: MCxxxxx

Settings->General->About->Model: MCxxxxx or MBxxxxx?

This is how you compare MC or non-MC model for the iPodtouch2G.

iPhone3GS: How to check?

Method 1:
You can determine your production week from the Serial number in your Setting->General->About screen.

The week number is usually the 4th and 5th digit of the serial number. eg. a SN beginning with 88926xxxxxx would be week 26 of 2009.

3Gs units made week 45 or later usually have the Newer bootrom. Before week 40 they usually have the Older one. Between weeks 40 and 45, results vary, use Method 2.

Method 2:
Good: iBoot-359.3; Bad: iBoot-359.3.2

Put your iPhone into DFU mode. (iClarified)

Using Windows:

  • Go to Start->Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager on your Windows machine.

  • Look for 'Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller', you will find 'Apple Mobile Device USB Driver' as a subitem there.

  • Right Click and choose 'Properties', navigate to 'Details' tab and select Device Instance Path from the dropdown list box. At the end of this information string, you will find the bootrom version, eg. [iBoot-359.x].

Using Mac:

  • Open System Profiler and navigate to Hardware->USB in the left menu.

  • In the USB Device Tree pane at top right, click on 'Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode).'

  • In the information pane at bottom right, locate the 'Serial Number' string. At the end of this information string, you will find the bootrom version, eg. ;iBoot-359.x].

After checking, remember to Hold Power + Home Button till the Apple logo appears.

How to Downgrade from iOS 4.0 to OS 3.1.2.

WOOHOO!! I was doing the stardard method to downgrade my iPhone3GS to OS 3.1.2 from iOS 4.0 when IT CRASHED!!!
Keeps giving the 1015 ERROR!!

Thankfully I remained calm by jumping up and down the walls of my room, i found a solution! (did alittle googling of cos xD)

Preparation:
Download OS 3.1.2 IPSW file and Redsn0w.
Files are provided below.

Its crucial that you follow these steps EXACTLY!

Here are the steps:

1. Right-click on to Notepad and select Run as Administrator.
2. Open the file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts (Windows) or /etc/hosts (Mac OS X) and add the following entry to the bottom of the file.
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Restore
———-
3. Connect your iPhone to the USB and put it into DFU mode. iTunes will display an alert stating you need to restore your device, click ok then on Mac: Hold option + click restore, on Windows: Hold Shift + click restore and navigate to your previously downloaded 3.1.2 FW.

4. After the restore finishes you should be hit with a 1015 error. That’s expected. Your phone should be in Recovery mode now and iTunes will tell you to restore again. Click OK then hold option + click on restore again – this time you do not have to go into DFU mode – and navigate to the 3.1.2 FW.

Jailbreak
———–
5. After the restore finishes again it’ll throw another 1015 error. That’s expected again. This time, just select OK and close iTunes. Open Redsn0w 0.9.4 and jailbreak as normal. Uncheck all the ticks while jailbreaking.

6. After the jailbreak is finalized your device should reboot and strange enough you successfully downgraded to 3.1.2.

Warning: Spirit Jailbreakers: Do Not Update while using the Spirit JB Exploit. Use RedSn0w, PwnageTool, or Sn0wBreeze to jailbreak first, and THEN you may use these new tools.

Requirements:

  • iDevice must be already Jailbroken.

  • Must not be Jailbroken with Spirit.

Device Supported:

  • iPhone 3GS (old bootrom)

  • iPhone 3G (might require DFU)

  • iPod touch 2G (non MC model)

*NOTE: Not sure if you are non-MC or old bootrom? Check here or here.

In almost every case, you need to be previously jailbroken except for the 3G, but you must NOT be jailbroken with Spirit.

If you have already upgraded to iOS 4.0, don't worry! Just follow my guide

Note: Jailbreak information have removed from front page, you can still find them in the Guides categories or HERE.

Update #1: TinyUmbrella updated to 4.00.19 (Links updated below).

TinyUmbrella has been updated to support iOS 4.0. You can now save your iOS 4 SHSH regardless of whether your iDevice is jailbroken. Links below.

iPhone4 owners - although I have preliminary support for iPhone4 iOS4 - you may have to rerun it after I get a hold of a restore session depending on what I find.
These devices have been tested with iTunes > 9. (Up to and including 9.2)

  • iPhone 3GS

  • iPod Touch 3G

  • iPod Touch 2G

  • iPad (No changes as 4.0 hasn't been released for iPad)

If you have an iPhone 3G you don't need to save your SHSH.
I recommend all iDevice users to follow these instructions by iClarified to ensure you can downgrade to iOS 4.0 in the future.
This applies to those who don't jailbreak as well.

iTunes iOS 4.0 Update Slow?

Here are some ways you could update your iPhone/iPod touch to iOS 4.0:

1: Update via iTunes (kinda slow now that everyone is trying to get a piece of it).

2: Download the IPSW file and do a Restore via iTunes. (Faster method. Slightly more steps.)

  1. Download IPSW file (aka iOS firmware) from the links below. Make sure you download for the correct device.

  2. On iTunes,
Windows :  Hold the Shift key and click Restore.
Mac: Hold the Alt/Option key and click Restore.

  3. Navigate to the IPSW file and click on Choose or Ok.

  4. iTunes will now restore your device. This can take up to 10 minutes. Once done, you'll be rebooted to iOS 4.0.

PwnageTool Jailbreak for 3GS, 3G & ipt2G (Mac only)

About 4 hours ago (while i was still sleeping),
iPhone Dev-Team released a Jailbreak tool for the iPhone 3GS! How quick is that? FYI, the Jailbreak tool is only for the Mac (sad thing for us on Windows).

Update #1 (7:56am): Jailbreak Guide by iClarified released (below).
Update #2 (3:08pm): Guide for iPhone 3G.
Update #3 (4:49pm): PwnageTool 4.0 Updated to PwnageTool 4.01 (links updated).
Updare #4 (24/6 10:57am): Guide for iPod touch 2G.

PwnageTool 4.01 Release Info

NB: With PwnageTool 4.01 certain devices are not supported this is because they are not supported in iOS 4.0 or they are not supported by our software. We’re working on ways to get past these restrictions.

  • iPhone 2G - not supported

  • iPod Touch - not supported

  • iPod Touch 3G - not supported

PwnageTool 4.01 only recognizes the official IPSWs that came out yesterday. If you had developer access to the “4.0 GM” IPSWs, do not try to use those.

iPhone 3GS

Summary: Currently, PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.

  • If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode.

  • If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.01

iPhone 3G

  • If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3G at 3.1.2 (but not jailbroken with Spirit) then you should create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.01 and restore from recovery mode or DFU mode.

  • If you have an out of the box iPhone 3G you should restore using a PwnageTool 4.01 ipsw using DFU mode.

  • If you have a Jailbroken 3.1.3 iPhone 3G it is very possible that this can fail from recovery mode, if this failure happens you will need to restore using DFU mode.

  • As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use Redsn0w on iPhone 3G (on both Windows and Mac).

IMPORTANT! Whenever you need to enter DFU mode, you will need to do so using PwnageTool.

iPod touch 2G

  • If you have an iPod touch 2G (non-MC model) that is jailbroken (but not with Spirit) then you can restore using recovery mode.

  • As an alternative to PwnageTool, you can use Redsn0w on non-MC iPod Touch 2G (on both Windows and Mac).

Baseband Unlock

  • As you probably know by now, ultrasn0w has been updated to cover all basebands from 04.26.08 onward. Many thanks to @sherif_hashim for finding the crashing command that the new ultrasn0w 0.93 uses! He worked hard at finding the crash, and he kept it confidential until the right time to use it.

  • Major props to @oranav (who found the earlier +xlog crash). He also had this crashing command!

  • iPhone 3G and 3GS baseband unlockers (those who rely on ultrasn0w to make phone calls) should always be very wary to update their firmware, however our Ultrasn0w application will unlock all recent (including the current) 3GS and 3G baseband firmware versions. Once you are jailbroken using PwnageTool 4.01, install ultrasn0w from Cydia and you’ll be unlocked.

  • Remember! This baseband unlock situation is rare, should you upgrade your iPhone blindly at the next iOS release please don’t expect an unlock - but for now you are OK (whatever state your baseband is in).

Redsn0w Jailbreak for 3G & ipt2G (PC & Mac)

The iPhone Dev-Team released a beta Jailbreak for the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G.

Update #1 (1:06pm): Jailbreak guide released by iClarified (Mac only for now) below.
Update #2 (1:23pm): For Windows too.
Update #3 (23/06 10:07am): There’s a new redsn0w beta (links were updated below) that should fix any iBooks problems people were seeing. Just run this new version 0.9.5b5-4 and deselect Cydia (you don’t want to reinstall Cydia over itself).
Update #4 (30/06 8:28am): There’s a new redsn0w beta (links were changed below) that should fix any APN or MMS issues that users were seeing. It’s safe to re-run it on an already jailbroken iPhone without restoring… Just deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that.

redsn0w beta has been updated to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G (in addition to jailbreaking the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G).

Requirements:

  • iTunes 9.2

  • iPhone3G and iPodTouch2G (for now)

  • Windows & Mac OSX

  • iOS 4.0 only (for now)

The download links for redsn0w 0.9.5b5-5 are:

For now, the redsn0w beta release supports only the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at today’s 4.0. It’s still a beta, so you’ll need to let Cydia reorganize, reload, and update after using redsn0w.

iOS 4.0..

Apple is supposed to release iOS 4.0 today 21/06/10 but apparently I'm in Singapore so its gonna be "delayed"...

Well... pass 3 days I've been on iOS 4.0 without Jailbreak and its pretty awesome! without regrets i can say.. this 3 days have been the longest time I've not Jailbroken my device.. and surprisingly iOS 4.0 wasn't torturing as I've thought it would..
