iPhone 4 Jailbroken!

GeoHot has done it again now with the iPhone 4!

Though he will not be releasing his Jailbreak tool and will be saving the exploit for the future... It's ok to most of us as Comex will be releasing his that will be able to Jailbreak all iDevices on iOS4..
Got one of these in the mail today and figured I'd give it a shot.

As far as a release goes, it probably won't happen from me. limera1n is little more than a raindrop on a website; it was never mentioned by me previous to this post. pwned4life is a complete invention of some blogger in a basement somewhere. When I said pwned for life, I was referring to the original iPhone, 3G, and Touch; which of course are, by the aptly named PwnageTool.

Again, please don't ask for release dates. Every person that does makes me want to release a little bit less.

GeoHot.

Doctors Use FaceTime Video Calls for Medical Consultations

At least one pair of doctors have used FaceTime video calling to consult on a patient who risked amputation, according to CultofMac.

In what may be the first documented iPhone 4 medical video consultation, University of Arizona surgeon David G. Armstrong, connected via FaceTime to give with Los Angeles Surgeon Lee Rogers’ a look at a patient who had undergone foot reconstruction at the University’s Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA). The virtual consult came in handy since Dr. Rogers was attending the American Diabetes Association meeting in Orlando, Florida when he took the “FaceTime” call from Armstrong, who had returned from Orlando to his SALSA clinics a day earlier.

“This really is a game changing tool,” said Armstrong, Professor of Surgery and SALSA director. “While the University of Arizona has had one of the world’s top tele-health systems, the ability to communicate quickly with something that is an afterthought has the potential to alter how we work with our colleagues and patients. Just as with the iPod in music and the laptop in computing, it is not the change in technology, but the change in form factor and ubiquity that alters this landscape.”

Decoded:  like cousin the iPad, doctors are finding it easier and faster to use in a pinch. In California, a hospital started handing iPads out to staff, may also find equipping employees with the devices cheaper than dedicated hardware and software.

At Kaweah Delta Health Care District in Visalia, doctors and staff already use smart phones, including the iPhone, to access the hospital’s network.  Over the weekend, the small group of doctors in a trial run were given iPads to keep abreast of patients, whether they are off site or in another wing of the hospital.

So, yeah, it’s nice to think that the iPhone’s FaceTime will be used for giving more than just good face, or other bits. Though in my experience the novelty of video calls — available outside the US for years — wears off faster than you can pretend the connection fell because whatever you’re doing, it’s not quite ready for primetime…

FaceTime over 3G network now possible on the iPhone 4

FaceTime can now be used on the 3G network!! Ok FaceTime is a video call function that was created for the iPhone 4 but it was originally supposed to work on Wi-Fi only.

Spain is part of the next group of countries to get the new device. Also included is: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Lexembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Former Apple Employees Speak About Working at Apple

A few former Apple employees have come forward to speak about their jobs and the overall culture at Apple. Interested to read more? Check out the link at the bottom.
Corporate Culture
Apple is a pretty divided mix of typical corporate red tape and politics mixed in with startup level urgency when the direction comes from Steve. If you have a project that Steve is not involved in, it will take months of meetings to move things forward. If Steve wants it done, it's done faster than anyone thinks is humanly possible. The best way to get any cross departmental work done was to say its for Steve and you'd probably have it the same day.

Apple Analyzes your App Usage Data

According to reporters from Bloomberg, Apple Inc., with a storehouse of billions of music, movie and software downloads, is studying the buying habits of many of its 150 million iTunes users to show more appealing mobile ads.
Apple knows what you’ve downloaded, how much time you spend interacting with applications and knows even what you’ve downloaded, don’t like and deleted,” said Pasqua, whose clients include Toyota Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. She isn’t currently working with Apple on iAd campaigns.

Relying on the music, videos and apps that customers are downloading from its iTunes, App Store and iBooks helps Apple sketch a behavioral profile that can be paired with appropriate promotional messages. On its website, Apple says its “standard targeting options” include demographics, application preferences, music passions, movie genre interests, television genre interests and location.

Stop Motion iPhone 4 Disassembly

From TechRestore at YouTube, as seen on Gizmodo
"1784 hi-res photos combine to make a stop-motion expose of the iPhone 4, revealing every detail of construction, from packaging, down to the chips on the logic-board. Set to a custom electronic/glitch soundtrack, with fast paced action, this is no ordinary unboxing and take-apart video! "

And I cannot agree more.

Imagine the number of hours spent taking those 1784 photos.

And then the number of hours spent editing, perfectly showing us every part and angle within the iPhone 4 for our scrutiny.

For your entertainment, here's a short video made by MysteryGuitarMan on the iPhone way back.

iPod Touch Cluster MoviePlay

Most of us would be happy to get a single video to play on our PMP without having to run it through some sort of transcoder first, but the folks at Mongoose Studio needed something more complex. They've released a video of a project that's been in the works for some time, clustering 12 iPod touchesinto a sort of bezel-riffic widescreen display. All are controlled by a master, 13th iPod that can cause them to display a clock in the interest of verifying synchronization (which is far from perfect, as you'll see in the embed below), or to trigger the playing of a movie. We're guessing that the footage must be manually split into appropriate files for each device, and we're also guessing that horrible things would happen should someone come along and re-shuffle them. But, if you have a lot of friends with iPhones and a lot of free time to prep the film, this could make for a rather interesting movie night -- until someone gets a call, that is.

" this could make for a rather interesting movie night -- until someone gets a call, that is. "

Contradictory sentence here as iPod touches don't receive calls.

However, this is cool.

I must say that I wouldn't enjoy watching a video on this form of display because of the empty spaces between the iPods.

Imagine this on the iPad.

Imagine this on the HD screen iPhone 4.

Revolutionary.

Cause of Antenna Issue on the iPhone 4 due to Clean hands?

A post-doctoral biochemistry fellow at a leading American university has told Wired that Apple likely missed the iPhone 4's reception issues due to cleanliness. It has got to do with the electrostatic charge on our hands, the easy fix? Coating the antenna strip with a thin layer of plastic.

Here is an email sent to Steve Jobs and 2 Apple staff:
Subject: HowToFix for minimal cost — hydrophobic organic thin film layer

Hi,

In truth, Apple’s explanation for iPhone 4 signal reception problem is inaccurate at best and disingenuous at worst. iPhone users are in some of the hottest and most humid parts of the country this summer and have salty, damp hands especially at events such as baseball games, barbecues, or other outdoor activities. having bare metal antennae purposely handled will absolutely short the signal. This problem will be difficult to reproduce in Apple’s labs because the engineers are required to wash their hands before touching devices, which also strips off the natural hand electrolytes that are ever-present in the field on a hot day.

Anyway, the solution is not a redesign of the phone, but rather an electrically insulating organic hydrophobic layer atop the bare metal. a variety of plastics will work, such as polyethers, polystyrenes, or nylons. you could even use the plastic labels ever-present on aluminum soda cans, which likewise have an electrically insulating effect when holding said cans. these plastic coatings can be very very thin films which do not ruin the aesthetics of the device, and would require a minimal change of your production line. More importantly, this coating in no way affects the ability to recycle the aluminum — the organic thin film layer will burn away cleanly during the aluminum remelt process. Phones that have already shipped could easily be coated with this new layer at any Apple retail store or with a simple kit you could send to your customers.

In summary, this is a problem of electrochemistry, and certainly NOT a problem of software design, nor one that can possibly be solved by a software update.

Apple needs to hire some chemists.

Best regards,
XXXXXXXXXX, Ph.D.

Sn0wbreeze Updated to v1.7 to Support New Bootrom & MC

Not too long ago, iH8sn0w updated Sn0wbreeze to be able to assist in the Jailbreaking of the new bootrom 3GS, iPod touch2G with MC models and iPod touch3G. It will be a Tethered Jailbreak for these iDevices. Again, it will be not easy to Jailbreak these iDevices.

I recommend waiting for Comex to release his Jailbreak software which will support all devices on iOS 4. Most likely he will wait for Apple to release a new firmware ie. 4.01 or 4.1, that will fix the iPhone4's signal issue.

No other changes for the rest of the devices.

Cracked iPhone? [Singapore]

Hello everyone!

Recently, when I was in a hurry, I dropped my iPhone, causing a big crack on it.

ouch.

We spend $50 on original cases and screen protectors from the Apple retail shops. But don't expect the best quality.

Should your phone get a crack, please note that your warranty will now be void, until you pay for a new one, S$350 for a 32GB iPhone 3GS.

They claim that a brand new iPhone will be given. I was using a new bootrom model previously, and the iPhone I got was a new bootrom model. It is given in a separate box, with just an iPhone inside. IMO, it is a refurbished one that you pay S$350 for.

The Singtel service center is at Exeter Road, it is called Hello@Comcentre. It has almost no queue. I went at 8pm.
For further inquiries, dial 1688. Ask all the questions you have, take all the time you have in the world.

Alternatively, if you have the time and are willing to take the risk of getting outsiders to play with your S$1000 iPhone, you could search on random forums like hardwarezone where there are plenty of people offering iPhone/iPod touch servicing at a cheaper price.

Apple Making It As Easy As Possible To Return Your iPhone 4

In the recent cases of cracked screens (front and back), the antenna issues (aka Death Grip) and even the discoloured LCD screens, Apple in the US has changed its return policy to 30 days without being charged for restocking fee.

Well, when it actually hits Singapore I sincerely hope none of these Apple issues will be affecting the iPhone4s being shipped here (cause i really want one for myself)!! Recent news is that the Signal Bars are not displaying correct according to Apple and it can be fixed with a Software update. Let's hope they are right!

Either way, they should be giving out free bumpers!! :D

Custom Firmware Gives iOS4 Features to iPhone2G

If you have iDevices like the iPhone2G or the iPod touch 1G, you'll know that Apple does not have any more new firmware updates for these iDevices. Which means to say no update to iOS4.

The Custom firmware created by Matteo Morando is based on 3.1.3 and is built using PwnageTool. It incorporates numerous utilities to add features such as multitasking, wallpaper, tethering, sms count, and more.

iTunes Cloud Capabilities in September Delayed?

iTunes Cloud is all about being able to streaming music and movies from Apple’s servers to your computers, devices, etc. Streaming music and movies from your home computers to your other computers, remote devices, etc. Wireless iTunes syncing with devices.

All this is set to be delayed due to external factors against iTunes. I would definitely like to have wireless sync for my devices! :D

According to "Apple sources" speaking in total anonymity and confidence, one of the most hotly anticipated iTunes upgrades may be on tap for late summer. As it stands, iTunes could finally get the cloud capability we've all been hoping for. The update, of course, wouldn't come as a shock to anyone as such a development has been widely anticipated for what seems like ages. But there are doubts about a September roll out. And not without good reason.

A
Boy Genius Report (which started the whole iTunes cloud talk again) indicates that the new cloud capabilities for iTunes will be partitioned into three groups: (1) Streaming music and movies from Apple’s servers to your computers, devices, etc. (2) Streaming music and movies from your home computers to your other computers, remote devices, etc. (3) Wireless iTunes syncing with devices.

While that all sounds fine and good, our sources (and those also speaking with
CNET) are holding off on pronouncing September as the definite launch time-frame for the iTunes revamp. Why? Because there are issues beyond Apple's control that could continue to delay the iTunes update. Apple, for example, still hasn't secured the licenses it will need from a variety of content providers, including the top four music labels in the US.

Although Apple is believed to have been working on the aforementioned major iTunes tweaks since it scooped up Lala last winter, it is quite possible, in fact, that Google's rumored and much talked about iTunes competitor (streaming music, with songs for download) could be released before iTunes gets the cloud capability that seems like a no-brainer to all who continue to wait for its arrival.

Why Apple's iPhone 4 Update Won't Fix Your Reception Problem

This graphic shows why some people experience the iPhone 4 signal drop problems while others haven't been able to reproduce it. It also explains why Apple's incoming software update—which promises more accurate signal bars—won't fix the antenna problem.

Experiencing this transmission/reception loss, however, depends on the strength of the signal itself:

• If your signal-to-noise ratio is perfect—like when you have a clear line of sight with a cell tower that is not overloaded—a typical 19.8dB attenuation will leave you with a healthy data transmission. In this case, the interference will not cause any problems to your normal usage of the iPhone 4. Your web pages will load normally and your calls will work just fine.

• However, you can experience the transmission and reception problems when you're working with a moderate quality signal. Since no wireless network provides us with optimal transmission absolutely everywhere, every iPhone 4 user is likely to encounter such problems at some point. In these cases, depending on the signal-to-noise ratio level, the attenuation caused by your hand may make your iPhone 4's signal health drop into dangerous areas, causing data loss and voice quality degradation.

Change of Blog Name! :D

Hey guys & gals! Everything here is still the same, just a change of blog name as I might be buying a domain soon! how soon, i do not know but I would have to build up this reputation 1st. :D

Welcome to iCr8zy's iPhone Blog!

Apple: iPhone 4 Reception Problem Is Explained by "Incorrect Signal Display"

Apple claims that the iPhone 4 reception problem doesn't exist. They say that the "dramatic drop in [signal] bars" is explained by an erroneous signal display. However, they don't address the data and voice degradation caused by their design.

A message from Apple:

CUPERTINO, Calif., July 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ —

Dear iPhone 4 Users,

The iPhone 4 has been the most successful product launch in Apple's history. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned.

To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.

At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?

We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don't know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

To fix this, we are adopting AT&T's recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone's bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.

We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same- the iPhone 4's wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused.

As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Pressure Sensitive Drawing on the iPad

Ten One Design has released a demo video showing pressure sensitive drawing on the iPad.

The video shows how pen pressure can be used to change the width of a line. Palm rejection capabilities are also demonstrated.

Unfortunately this capability requires use of private APIs which Apple does not allow. They are hopeful that these APIs will soon become public and are planning to release a free software library so anyone can incorporate pressure sensitivity into their app.

An Alternative to the Expensive iPhone4 Bumper

Heard of those signal issues on iPhone4? Thought of buying the iPhone4 with the Bumpers sold by Apple? Here is an innovative way to save money and still have a Bumper for your iPhone 4!

Entering this morose situation with a bit of ingenuity is Oliver Nelson, who alerts us to the fact that rubber wristbands of the sort your favorite cyclist wears are apparently an almost perfect fit when stretched around the 4's antennae. He advises that a 1.125-inch long by 0.125-inch wide incision (into the unstretched band) is necessary to keep the 30-pin port and speakers open, but otherwise it seems like a pretty effortless and dirt cheap way to avoid all this drama.

Apple Issues iPhone 4 Exchange Fix via Profile Update

If you noticed after updating to iOS4 that you are unable to sync with your company's Microsoft Exchange Server, here's why.

Symptoms

Immediately after updating to iOS 4, some users may notice that Exchange ActiveSync Mail, Contacts, or Calendars do not sync, or sync very slowly. In addition, some Exchange Server administrators may notice their servers running slowly.

Products Affected

  • iPod touch.

  • iPhone 3G.

  • iPhone 4

  • iPhone 3GS

Resolution

To work around this issue, users should install a configuration profile from Apple that increases the amount of time the iOS 4 device will wait for the Exchange Server to respond to its sync requests. For best results, the profile should be installed on as many iOS 4 devices at your company as possible.

To install the profile:

  1. Use Safari on your iOS 4 device to download the configuration profile. It may be easiest to read this article with your iPhone or iPod touch and tap the download link there, but you may also email the attachment to another email account on your iOS 4 device, and tap the attachment to open it.

  2. Tap Install to install the profile, and enter your passcode if prompted.

  3. A warning message will appear because the profile is not signed. Tap Install Now.

  4. Tap Done to complete the installation, then power off your device and power it back on.

  5. Wait for your Exchange data to finish syncing.

After installation, the profile will be listed under Settings > General > Profile.

Apple iTunes Wireless Syncing!

Wireless Syncing, commonly know as Cloud Sync might be available to iTunes in the coming future, according to BGR's reliable source.

One of our reliable Apple sources has just filled us in on some of the company’s iTunes plans, and they’re exciting. We have been told iTunes will be getting a huge cloud capability that many people have been asking for (and logically thought would happen sooner or later). These new capabilities are broken down into three groups:

  1. Streaming music and movies from Apple’s servers to your computers, devices, etc.

  2. Streaming music and movies from your home computers to your other computers, remote devices, etc.

  3. Wireless iTunes syncing with devices.

First iPhone 4 Class Action Suit Filed Against Apple and AT&T

The first iPhone 4 class action suit against Apple and AT&T has been filed today in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. The lawsuit focus on the antenna design problems, making several claims:

• General Negligence (APPLE and AT&T)
• Defect in Design, Manufacture, and Assembly (APPLE)
• Breach of Express Warranty (APPLE)
• Breach of Implied Warranty for Merchantability (APPLE and AT&T)
• Breach of Implied Warranty of Fitness for a Particular Purpose (APPLE and AT&T)
• Deceptive Trade Practices (APPLE and AT&T)
• Intentional Misrepresentation (APPLE and AT&T)
• Negligent Misrepresentation (APPLE and AT&T)
• Fraud by Concealment (APPLE and AT&T)

Apple has been criticized by iPhone 4 users and media for the reception problems that seem to result from its faulty antenna design. While all cellphones experience a decrease in signal quality when you touch their antenna, the iPhone 4 design puts the antenna all around it, making difficult to avoid under natural handling of the phone. Cases started to appear in MacRumors.com and Gizmodo.com on June 23, one day before the official launch of the iPhone 4, from users who received their units earlier.

After those initial reports, thousands of users started to report reception and transmission problems in different countries around the world, which resulted in loss of internet connections and voice call drops and voice quality degradation. Other tests have demonstrated the antenna problems since then.

The lawsuit was filed by Ward & Ward, PLLC and Charles A. Gilman, LLC. on behalf of Kevin McCaffrey, Linda Wrinn and a number of other iPhone 4 users. It is not the same iPhone 4 class action lawsuit currently said to be in the works by the California law firm that sued Facebook and Zynga.

Apple's iPhone 4: Thoroughly Reviewed

Brian Klug & Anand Lal Shimpi on 6/30/2010 post on their research on the iPhone4 reception issue and here are their findings on www.anandtech.com.

The site was able to get the iPhone 4 to display signal strength numerically and mapped the bars to signal strength in the image below.

You can see just how little dynamic range iOS 4 has for reporting signal; over 40% of the range of possible signal levels (from -99 dBm to -51 dBm) is reported as 5 bars.

According to their tests, holding the iPhone 4 in your left hand and crossing the black strip can result in a worst case drop of 24 dBm in signal. This explains why some users report not having receptions issues. If you live in an area with high signal strength (-51 to -75) a 24 dBm drop won't even register on the display.

The site also reveals why some people say they can use their devices even when the bars have dropped all the way down. Typically at -113 dBm the iPhone would drop all calls and data. However, improvements to the baseband have made holding on to calls and data transfers at low signal levels massively better.

They conclude that the drop in signal from holding the phone with your left hand arguably remains a problem. Changing the bars visualization may indeed help mask it, and to be fair the phone works fine all the way down to -113 dBm, but it will persist - software updates can change physics as much as they can change hardware design. At the end of the day, Apple should add an insulative coating to the stainless steel band, or subsidize bumper cases. It's that simple.

Planetbeing to Jailbreak the iPhone 4!

Looks like there are still people out there to take up the challenge to make iPhone4 exploit jailbreak happen! Though there is no date of a release for the Jailbreak software, this screenshot from an iPhone4 will keep you excited for the release! As you can see the resolution is very high on the iPhone4.

It's July, here comes the iPhone 4, in Singapore!

It's the 1st day of July and the last day of my common tests! Yes yes the iPhone 4 will be released here in Singapore in July.

Well, that's what Steve Jobs said! It all boils down to the telcos (Singtel, Starhub & M1), when they would officially put it out on their stores! My guess, is that they are all plotting to release it on the same day, together!

Chatter aside, remember to 'Register Your Interest' with your providers today!
